Replicating Quantified Noun Phrases in Database Semantics
نویسنده
چکیده
Predicate calculus treats determiner-noun sequences like the man, every man, or several men as ‘quantified noun phrases.’ This analysis in terms of quantifiers, variables, and connectives creates a major structural difference compared to the handling of proper names. The modeling of natural language communication in database semantic (DBS), in contrast, treats the functorargument structure as primary, regardless of whether an argument is of the sign type symbol (determiner-noun sequence), name, or indexical (pronoun). In this paper, the meanings carried by different determiners are reanalyzed as controlling the internal matching between nominal symbols and individuals, or sets of individuals, at the level of context.

A New Look at the Semantics and Pragmatics of Numerically Quantified Noun Phrases
This paper presents some arguments against a unilateral account of numerically quantified noun phrases and for a bilateral account of such expressions. It is proposed that where numerically quantified noun phrases give rise to at least readings, this is the result of one of two forms of pragmatic reasoning. To that end, the paper develops an independently motivated account of specificity and ex...
متن کاملTreating Quantifiers in Database Semantics
Abstract This paper analyzes the syntactic and semantic structure of noun phrases in English and Korean, using the time-linear derivations of Database Semantics.1 In comparison with Predicate Calculus, which handles the semantics of determiners like some and all at the highest level of the logical syntax, Database Semantics takes the alternative approach of specifying their semantics as atomic ...
متن کاملIs Coordination Quantification?
We explore the semantics of conjunction using a neo-Davidsonian semantics expressed in a synchronous grammar. We propose to model conjunction as quantification over the set of conjoined entities, and discuss problems that arise in this approach when we have conjoined quantified noun phrases.

Depiction Verbs and the Definiteness E ff ect Introduction This paper is part of a longer project on the semantics of depiction verbs and their associated relational nouns. Depiction verbs include verbs for physical acts, such as ' draw' (with relational noun ' drawing'), 'sketch', 'caricature', 'sculpt', 'write (about)', and verbs for mental ones, such as 'visualize', 'imagine', and 'fantasi...
متن کاملComputational Semantics Of Mass Terms
Although the formalisms normally used for describing the semantics of natural languages are far from computationally tractable, it is possible to isolate particular semantic phenomena and interpret them within simpler formal systems. Quantified mass noun phrases is one such part. We describe a simple formal system suitable for the interpretation of quantified mass noun phrases. The main issue o...
